From Wigs to the Wedding Aisle: My 10-Year Journey with Hair Loss

At age 14, I started to lose my hair. I saw all sorts of specialists, but none could say or do anything to make it return. After trying several treatments, I decided to bite the bullet and get a wig. It was the best thing I could have done—my confidence grew, and I finally felt like a regular teenager instead of standing out.

Finding Support in Paul

When I was 15, I met Paul. I’d had "boyfriends" before, but none truly understood my hair loss or how it affected me deep down. From day one, Paul never made jokes or drew attention to my hat. Even as we started dating and I began wearing wigs, he was incredibly supportive.

It took a while before I could take my wig off in front of him. I didn’t feel like a woman without it; I just felt ugly. But I shouldn’t have worried—he truly wasn't bothered. Over the years, he saw me through every hairstyle, wig, and top piece imaginable.

The Road to Recovery

After eight years of wearing a wig, I finally had enough hair for a top piece to be weaved and bonded into my own hair. This felt even more "normal" because it only came off every 6-8 weeks. The best part? Every time it was removed, the hair underneath was growing!

A year later, my stylist persuaded me to go home without the hairpiece. The train ride home was the scariest and happiest moment I can remember. My full head hadn’t seen the light in public for 10 years.

The Big Day: June 20th, 2015

In 2012, Paul proposed! Amidst the excitement, the worries flooded back: Would my hair be okay for the big day? Would it fall out again? All the things a bride-to-be shouldn’t have to worry about.

"I had nothing against wigs—they had served me well for so long—but I felt like I needed to have this day with my own hair."

Emma Romans, owner of Betty Brown Wigs, was there to help. After several trials, we settled on a braided headband through the top of my hair. This allowed my own hair to cover thinner areas perfectly. Looking back at the pictures, you really can’t tell that it’s not all completely mine.

Looking to the Future

Emma did a fantastic job, and I received so many compliments. I know I am lucky to have come this far, as I know for many, this is a lifelong condition. I don’t know what the future holds for my hair—it could all go again—but I’m determined to make the most of it and never take my hair for granted again.
