Transgender

Transgender is an umbrella term that generally includes those who adopt the clothing, appearance or lifestyle of a gender different from that assigned to them at birth. This could be for just a precious hour or so in the privacy of their own home or a permanent everyday situation that may, or may not, involve surgery and/or hormone therapy – or, more likely, something on the spectrum between these cases. Everyone is different. However, hairstyle is a crucial gender identifier for many people and consequently many transgender people will seek a wig that helps to define their gender identity so that they can feel comfortable and confident whether in social situations, out shopping or just relaxing at home.

The Beaumont Society was founded in 1966 as a self-help and social organisation for transgender people. The social and legal climate has changed considerably for the better in the past fifty years, but there is still a need for the work of the society in the United Kingdom and the world beyond. The Beaumont Society welcomes all transgender people, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, creed or colour and all varieties from nervous newcomers to those who are experienced and confident in their preferred gender. It has been at the forefront of supporting the transgender community, together with their partners and families, as well as advising and training on transgender issues.
